The Rhine-Main Area or Frankfurt Rhine-Main or Frankfurt/Rhine-Main is an economic and metropolitan region in the centre to south-west of Germany, roughly surrounding the area where the rivers Rhine and Main meet. The Frankfurt Rhine-Main area is – depending on definition – the second or third largest of the eleven official metropolitan regions in Germany and one of the fastest growing regions in terms of population.

While the exact boundaries of this important economic region have not been precisely defined, it is generally accepted that it consists of the cities of Frankfurt am Main, Offenbach am Main, Wiesbaden, Mainz, Worms, Darmstadt and Aschaffenburg and a further 18 districts. According to this, the metropolitan region has an area of 14,800 square kilometres with a population of approx. 5.5 million people.

The Rhine-Main area enjoys a central and strategic location in the southwest of Germany. Companies from many industries are based in the region and employ approx. 1.8 million employees. Frankfurt, most prominently, is an important European banking and financial services centre. There are also many other service providers in the area surrounding this city. The automotive industry plays another important role, with many suppliers to the automotive industry and many research and design centres being based in the area. One of the biggest employers and most important economic factors in the region is the Frankfurt-Rhine-Main Airport, Germany’s largest airport, the third-largest European airport in terms of passengers and the second-largest airport in Europe in terms of freight.
